Sources
| Source | Key? | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| SEC EDGAR | No | Filings, XBRL financials, insider transactions |
| Yahoo Finance | No | Real-time quotes, price history, options, dividends |
| Binance | No | Crypto prices (non-US only) |
| CoinGecko | Free key | Crypto rankings, broader crypto coverage |

When to Use --json
Use --json when you need to parse the output programmatically. Always place --json before the command:
omd --json quote AAPL
omd --json financials AAPL -p quarterly
omd --json crypto top 10
omd --json macro GDP --limit 5
Configuration
API keys via env vars or CLI:
export FRED_API_KEY=your_key
export COINGECKO_API_KEY=your_key
export FINNHUB_API_KEY=your_key
export ALPHA_VANTAGE_API_KEY=your_key
export EDGAR_USER_AGENT="YourCompany you@email.com"
# Or use CLI config
omd config set fredApiKey your_key
omd config set coingeckoApiKey your_key
omd config set finnhubApiKey your_key
omd config set alphaVantageApiKey your_key
omd config show
Routing
Commands automatically route to the best available source. If the top source fails or hits its rate limit, it falls back to the next one. Use --source <name> to force a specific provider.

| Financials | SEC EDGAR → Yahoo → Alpha Vantage |

Overview
open-market-data (omd) is a unified CLI that queries eight free data sources through a single interface, with automatic routing and fallback. It covers stocks, crypto, macroeconomic data, and SEC filings, making it easy to pull diverse market data quickly.
How This Skill Works
You run commands like omd quote AAPL or omd macro GDP. omd routes requests to the best available source and automatically falls back to the next when a source fails or hits a rate limit. You can force a specific provider and configure API keys for sources that require them.
When to Use It
- Quick stock/crypto quotes or price history when you want a resilient data pull across multiple sources
- Retrieve SEC filings or XBRL data with a single command (omd filing …)
- Pull macroeconomic indicators (GDP, unemployment) via FRED or World Bank
- Fetch earnings, dividends, or financials without juggling multiple APIs
- Run programmatic data pulls with --json for integration into apps
Quick Start
- Step 1: Install: npm i -g open-market-data (requires Node)
- Step 2: Configure keys: omd config set fredApiKey <key> (and other keys as needed)
- Step 3: Run a command: omd quote AAPL or omd --json quote AAPL
Best Practices
- Configure API keys via env vars or omd config before heavy use
- Use --json or --plain consistently when programmatic parsing is needed
- Use --source to lock to a preferred provider when you need consistency
- Rely on the routing/fallback for reliability; avoid hard-coding a single source
- Check the routing table to understand priority by data type (quotes, financials, macro, etc)
Example Use Cases
- omd quote AAPL
- omd financials AAPL -p quarterly -l 8
- omd macro GDP --limit 12
- omd filing TSLA --type 8-K -l 5
- omd crypto ETH
