claude-scholar

🚀 Simplify your research workflow with Claude Scholar, the complete configuration for Claude Code in data science, AI, and academic writing.

Installation
Run this command in your terminal to add the MCP server to Claude Code.
Run in terminal:
Command
claude mcp add --transport stdio jessevanwyk1-claude-scholar echo No MCP server available for claude-scholar; this repository describes a desktop application rather than a server-based MCP integration. \
--env CLAUDE_SCHOLAR_NOTE="This app is a standalone desktop tool for research workflow management."

How to use

claude-scholar is a desktop application designed to streamline the research workflow from initial idea to final publication. It provides a user-friendly interface to create projects, import data and sources, analyze data or organize notes, and export findings in multiple formats. While it does not expose a traditional command-line MCP server, you can think of its core capabilities as a cohesive toolset for managing scholarly projects: project setup, data import, analysis or organization, and export. To get started, download the latest release from the provided link, install the application on your OS (Windows, macOS, or Linux), and launch the app. Create a new project, then import datasets or references, configure your workstream within the project, perform analyses or note-taking, and export your final documents or reports as PDFs, Word documents, or presentations. If you need to share your work, you can also generate and export summaries or notes to your preferred formats directly from the interface.

How to install

Prerequisites:

  • A computer running Windows, macOS, or Linux
  • Approximately 8 GB RAM recommended for a smoother experience
  • At least 100 MB of free disk space for the application and sample data

Installation steps:

  1. Download the latest claude-scholar release ZIP from the Releases page linked in the README.
  2. Locate the downloaded ZIP file on your computer.
  3. Extract the ZIP archive to a desired location.
  4. Open the extracted folder and run the application installer or executable suitable for your OS (e.g., claude-scholar.exe on Windows, Claud-Scholar.app on macOS, or the corresponding launcher on Linux).
  5. Follow on-screen prompts to complete installation. When prompted, allow any required permissions to access files or databases.
  6. Launch claude-scholar and begin creating your first project.

Additional notes

Tips and known considerations:

  • This is a desktop application rather than a server-based MCP service, so there is no server command or container to run. If you’re integrating with other MCP tooling, plan to run claude-scholar locally and export data for use in external pipelines.
  • Ensure your system meets the minimum RAM and disk space recommendations to avoid slowdowns during data import or large projects.
  • Regularly check for updates/releases to access new features such as improved data import options or export formats.
  • If you encounter issues with installation, re-download the release ZIP to avoid corrupted archives and verify that your OS is supported by the release you chose.
